Sara A. Hickman (PhD, 2004), serves as manager of the NFL's Career Transition in Player Development, as well as coordinator of the Players Assistance and Personal Conduct programs. She help both rookies and veterans by overseeing the NFL's Life Skills Program, which raises players' awareness of the unique challenges and situations they might face in the NFL. Fernanda Ferreira (PhD, 1988) and John Henderson (PhD, 1989) have had distinguished careers in cognitive science. They have published extensively, trained many students and held many grants, and each of them is the Editor of one of the top journals in their fields. They recently left Michigan State University to take Chairs at the premier university of Scotland, the University of Edinburgh. We U.S. folks will miss them, but we trust they welcome visitors. Stacy Madison (BA 1987) is the cofounder and brand name behind Stacy's Pita Chip Company. The former social worker built the brand with her partner, Mark Andrus, from a sandwich cart in downtown Boston to a $60-million-a-year business employing 100 people. She has recently sold her company to PepsiCo. Read all about her in the UMass Magazine. (August, 2006)
Stacey Whitbourne (B.A. 2000) pursued her Ph. D. in Social/Developmental Psychology at Brandeis University. After completing her doctoral work in 2005 examining the role of cognition and physical activity, Stacey took a Post Doctoral Fellowship through The School of Public Health at Boston University and the VA Medical Center in Jamaica Plain. She works on the Normative Aging Study (NAS) which has followed a group of veterans since 1963, and is also busy working on publications. (August, 2006)
Rachel A. Whitmer (BS 1995) PhD University of California Davis, is a Scientist at Kaiser Permanente Northern California. She is an epidemiologist examining population level risk factors for cognitive impairment, dementia and Alzheimer disease. She was an NIH Faculty Scholar in the joint UCSF School of Medicine-Kaiser program, Building Interdisciplinary Research Careers in Women's Health. Her current research projects include studies on obesity, adipocytokines and dementia; glycemic control, diabetes treatment and risk of dementia and cognitive decline; midlife risk factors for Alzheimer's disease; and establishing a healthy aging registry for the Center on Applied Genetics and Epidemiological Research on Aging at Kaiser Permanente. She has published in top-tier journals, including the British Medical Journal and Neurology. Dr. Whitmer is the Principal Investigator of two federally funded studies. She lives in the East Bay Hills with her husband and two sons. (August, 2006)
Robyn Lebovitz (BA 2001) received her Ph.D. in Social & Developmental Psychology from Brandeis University in 2005. Her dissertation focused on obesity and maintenance of weight loss in adults. After completing an internship as a Research Scientist at The Gillette Company, Dr. Lebovitz now works in Atlanta as a consultant for BearingPoint's division of public services. At the present time, her client is the Center for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) Coordinating Office of Terrorism Preparedness and Emergency Response (COTPER). (August, 2006)
Stephen Werner (BA 06) signed a two-year contract with the Washington Capitals of the National Hockey League in March. He is expected to play for the minor league AHL champion Hershey Bears this year-though he is ready to impress during the Capitals training camp. ... (August, 2006)
