UMass Psychology

Research and Training

Overview: The University of Massachusetts, Amherst clinical psychology program uses a mentorship model for the education of students. This means in practice that individual faculty members select students to work with them. The criteria used for selection depend to a large extent on the compatibility of research interests between student and faculty member. Therefore, in applying for admission to the Clinical Psychology Program, you must indicate the faculty with whom you share research interests on the Faculty Research Interest Ranking Form Pdf to the right.  These faculty are the ones who will review your application most carefully. Even if your research interests are not fully formed (and we realize that this is the case for most students), and even if your research interests are likely to change as you develop your career, we still ask you to rank order two faculty who might be your best match.

Faculty: For Fall 2010 graduate admissions, the following faculty will be accepting student applications: David Arnold, Elizabeth Harvey, Maureen Perry-Jenkins, Sally Powers, and David Scherer.  Please fill out and return the Faculty Research Interests Ranking Form (on right) to indicate the faculty with whom you share research interests.

More Information: You may also find it useful to review our Program Statistics, our Frequently Asked Questions, and our listing of general faculty research areas. Of course, you should feel free to contact faculty members you might be interested in working with directly with questions.  Graduate students generally receive funding from a variety of sources, enough to cover some living expenses.  Graduate students who work as teaching or research assistants can earn a full tuition waiver.  You can also learn more about UMass tuition costs and fees.

Applications: Applications are processed centrally through the University of Massachusetts Graduate School. Please follow the instructions contained at their website when submitting your application. You must also fill out and return the Faculty Research Interests Form (on right) to indicate who you would like to work with as a mentor.
